Welcome to Las Vegas! Whether you’re new to town or just curious about how this place is set up, you might be surprised to learn that what people call "Las Vegas" isn’t just one city—it’s a mix of the City of Las Vegas, unincorporated Clark County, and a bunch of unique neighborhoods and master-planned communities. It can get a little confusing, but don’t worry—I’ve got you covered.
So, the City of Las Vegas is the actual official city, but funny enough, a lot of what people think of as "Las Vegas"—like the Strip—actually isn’t in the city limits at all! Crazy, right?
Downtown Las Vegas, which includes Fremont Street, the Arts District, and city government buildings.
The northern and western parts of the valley, including parts of Summerlin.
The Las Vegas City Council runs the city, and it has its own police department (Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, which also serves Clark County).
The city is working hard to expand beyond casinos and tourism, focusing on tech and business development.
Now here’s where it gets interesting—most of what tourists see when they visit Vegas is actually in unincorporated Clark County, not the City of Las Vegas. This means that all those iconic casinos and hotels? They fall under the county’s jurisdiction, not the city's.
The Clark County Commission runs things instead of a city government.
Businesses in unincorporated areas don’t have to pay city taxes, which is a big reason why many casinos and businesses choose to be here.
This area includes the Las Vegas Strip, Harry Reid International Airport, Allegiant Stadium, and a lot of other well-known landmarks.
On top of that, Clark County also oversees unincorporated towns. These places have their own identities but don’t have their own separate governments. Instead, the county takes care of services like fire and police.
Paradise – This is where most of the Strip is, along with UNLV.
Spring Valley – A big residential and commercial area just west of the Strip with a diverse community.
Enterprise – A fast-growing area in the southwest valley.
Sunrise Manor – Located on the east side near Frenchman Mountain.
Now let’s talk about neighborhoods. Las Vegas is packed with master-planned communities, which are basically huge, organized neighborhoods with parks, trails, shopping, and their own vibe.
Summerlin – One of the biggest and most well-known, with beautiful homes, parks, and shopping.
Southern Highlands – A luxury community with golf courses and a strong sense of community.
Centennial Hills – Up in the northwest, growing fast with lots of newer homes and great schools.
Green Valley – Actually in Henderson, a separate city, but known for being one of the first planned communities in the valley.
Rhodes Ranch – A gated golf course community in the southwest that’s great for families.
If you’re living here or thinking about moving, understanding how Las Vegas is structured can really help. Here are some key takeaways:
The Strip isn’t actually in the City of Las Vegas! It’s in Paradise, which is governed by Clark County.
Police and emergency services in both the city and county are handled by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.
Taxes and regulations can vary depending on whether you’re in the city, county, or one of the unincorporated areas.
Master-planned communities like Summerlin and Southern Highlands feel like small cities within the city, with their own HOA rules and amenities.
Las Vegas is a fascinating place with a unique setup, and now you know how it all fits together. Whether you’re here for the bright lights of the Strip, the suburban comfort of Summerlin, or the growing areas in Centennial Hills, there’s a spot for everyone in the Las Vegas Valley. Welcome to the neighborhood!
